Built to Live Outside.
Outdoor materials age — that's not a flaw, it's the deal you made with the sun and the rain. A few minutes of the right care, a few times a year, keeps every Lunivo piece at its best for the long run. This guide covers all four material families we build with.
Teak
What teak will naturally do.
Left outside and untreated, golden teak slowly weathers to a soft silver-gray. Small surface cracks (checking), grain variation, and seasonal movement are all normal — none of it weakens the wood. Prefer the honey tone? Keep reading.
- Routine — 2 to 3 times a year: mild detergent in warm water, soft-bristle brush along the grain, rinse, air dry.
- Keeping the golden tone: clean with a teak-specific cleaner and brightener (any brand works — Star Brite is a common one), then apply a teak protector if you wish. Skipping this changes nothing structurally — silver teak is healthy teak.
- New-teak note: fresh teak carries natural surface oils. Before first use, wipe all surfaces — including under the frame — with soapy water, and keep cushions off until it's dry. If oil transfers to fabric, treat it promptly with equal parts dish soap and warm water, then rinse thoroughly.
- Avoid: pressure washers, steel wool, and leaving teak in direct contact with grass or soil for long stretches — prolonged ground contact invites mold and fungus.
Powder-Coated Aluminum
- Routine: hose off dust and debris. For a deeper clean: mild detergent, warm water, and a soft sponge or lint-free cloth. Rinse and air dry — filtered sun or partial shade is best, not intense direct sun.
- Coastal homes: salt air works on finishes. A fresh-water rinse every few weeks keeps frames looking their longest.
- Avoid: abrasive pads and harsh solvents on the finish, and power tools on hardware during assembly — hand-tighten per your manual.
Resin Wicker
- Routine: brush or vacuum leaves and debris out of the weave first, then wash with mild soap and water and a soft brush. Rinse and air dry.
- What's normal: slight color and pattern variation — every piece is hand-woven, and no two are identical.
- Avoid: abrasive cleaners and anything solvent-based.
Cushions & Sunbrella® Fabric
- Spills: hose them off promptly — the faster the response, the simpler the fix.
- Routine wash: mild soap in lukewarm water, soft-bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, air dry. Sunbrella® is bleach-safe: for stubborn stains, a diluted bleach solution works — then rinse completely.
- Soaked cushions: stand them upright and let them drain and dry fully before use or storage.
- Off-season: store cushions somewhere cool and dry — never cover or store anything damp.
Seasonal Storage
- Clean and fully dry furniture before covering it — trapped moisture is how mildew starts.
- Cushions go indoors in the off-season; frames can stay outside under a breathable cover.
- Extra attention near pools and the ocean: rinse more often, cover more often.
